Local language given funding for education

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007 by admin

Found this on the ABC News site this morning:

————————————————

One of northern New South Wales’ local Aboriginal languages has been given a boost by the State Government.

The Aboriginal Affairs Minister, Paul Lynch, has handed over $15,000 in funding to the Birrelee Childrens’ Service in Tamworth to develop a DVD to teach Indigenous people the Gamilaraay language.

He says its one of just 20 remnants out of 200 original Aboriginal languages that once existed in New South Wales.

“It has survived to the extend that there are some elders who can speak it and what’s quite impressive and exciting is they’re teaching it to the younger generation in the Aboriginal community,” he said.

“As part of that process, this DVD will be very important as a way of keeping the language alive.”

This is great for the community, the language and the children who will take advantage of this DVD being produced.  Congratulations Birrelee.

Dabido blog on Microsoft UP Conference

Thursday, August 16th, 2007 by admin

I recently come across this Blog from Dabido, he was at the Microsoft UP Conference held in Sydney earlier this year. At this conference I was invited by MSFT to do a presentation on our work with Aboriginal languages and technology namely the program that we have developed called Miromaa. There is even a picture of myself which I remember having taken, but anyway there are some good words spoken and it was also good to see that he really got what I was trying to get across to the audience. Thanks Dabido.

Excerpt from website:

Wai, Kulila! Hey, Listen Up!
You are invited to experience an exciting world first – an online window into Pitjantjatjara language and culture!

This online learning site is just one part of what is known as Ngapartji Ngapartji – a long-term, inter-generational language and arts project based on Arrernte country in Mparntwe (Alice Springs, Central Australia). The project, coordinated by the award-winning social change arts company Big hART, is also made up of an experiential language show and a main stage theatre production. Both performance components have traveled to major Australian cities and arts festivals over the last 2 years, and feature elders and young people from the Pitjantjatjara-speaking community who also participate in a grass-roots community development program.
