Awabakal Seasonal Calendar

We are now in development of the Awabakal Seasonal Calendar - which will ultimately be launched as an online digital interactive experience. Once complete, we are partnering with Newcastle Libraries (City of Newcastle) for an exhibition of the Seasonal Calendar. Watch this space for our project progress.

Soundlines Podcast Channel Project

Aboriginal language is an oral tradition, so it is logical for the Awabakal Language Program and Miromaa Aboriginal Language & Technology Centre (MALTC) to develop a podcast channel focusing on understanding Aboriginal Language.

The first series of eight episodes are hosted by the Awabakal Language Program language researchers and educators, interviewing respected, experienced Aboriginal language representatives from the state and nation.

The project is in its early stage of planning - so keep visiting this page to follow our progress.

Funded in partnership with The Aboriginal Languages Trust (Department of Premier & Cabinet NSW)

Complete
LIBRARY DIGITISATION

With the generous funding of a Newcastle City Council Arts Culture and Heritage grant, Miromaa Aboriginal Language and Technology Centre (MALTC) was able to complete a library digitisation project in January 2022.

MALTC purchased a new computer for their library, then identified priority books and documents in their collection of over 3,000 items. Over 400 items were identified, and subsequently scanned with optical character recognition. Many of these items were both rare and fragile, and their digitisation has not only preserved the contents for future generations, but also preserved the longevity of the original documents, which will no longer have to be physically handled as often.

This digitisation has also allowed us to access and search through our own data more efficiently, and also share it with other organisations who share our goal of preserving Indigenous languages. In awarding us this grant, the City of Newcastle has therefore not only helped the local Indigenous community, but also Indigenous Australians nationwide.
